September Update

First of all I want to say that, like so many others, this day will always be a day of remembrance. I'll never forget the events that took place on 9/11/2001 and how it shaped this country. It's important that we never forget, and I don't think any of us will ever really be able to. God bless us all, and God bless the United States of America.

Here's what's going down production wise. We've got one shoot lined up this week, I'm hoping to get in more shots for our upcoming episodes. I'll be spending the rest of September editing other projects as well as the next Monster Cops episodes. We will be doing more shooting come October, where I hope to do a HUGE zombie shoot. It's always a fun thing when we do big zombie shoots, it always ends up being more like a party then a production.

For a better idea of what that might be like, check out our last Zombie shoot, which features an impromptu dance tribute to Michael Jackson's THRILLER.

Again, thanks to all those who have been messaging me, letting me know that you do want to see more Monster Cops and how so many of you support us. We really appreciate it. At the end of the day, we do it for your entertainment, and we can't wait to get more out to you.

We are on the verge of completing at least one more episode by October, with at least 3 more to follow. So it would be a good thing to have a bit of buzz going on for our little cult series.

Excited about these episodes, we're going to kind of break some rules, but it's kind of ok, because this series will be completely free for you to see online. No need to purchase a download, or a DVD, these particular episodes will be totally free for your enjoyment. Why? Because everybody's frickin broke. And free stuff is awesome.

But how do we make money, you ask? We don't. We put it out there, hope you love it, and then see what happens.

Welcome to the winter of our discontent. Or rather the summer of our pleasurous joy. Pleasurous. Is that even a word?

Anyways.

We're proud to say that our video clip Werewolf Vs. Military has surpassed 230,000 views.

We've started work on a new episode called Dead By Dawn. We'll be putting out a an episode that'll be about 15 minutes long. This will feature quite a bit of Zombie and Vampire action and maybe even one or two Werewolves.

Monstercops.com has been revamped and will be undergoing some changes, but we hope to have the site completely finished by October, just in time to debut some new episodes.

Our little production company will be doing a Web Series on Youtube. No budget filmmaking tutorials and such, and it will feature many behind the scenes of Monster Cops as well as our feature film Redd. Check out the official Redd site here. We're smack dab in the middle of production for that at the same time as monster cops.

Holy crap we're busy.

Thanks everyone for the messages of support, we're all very glad to know their are so many Monster Cops fans out there. We'll try to get you some new content very soon.

Let The Midnight Special Shine A Light on Me

Back in 2007 I released the very first installment of the Monster Cops franchise. The feature film Monster Cops: The Midnight Special.

The No-Budget Full time Comedy and part time Horror flick about a Secret Government Agency that hunts Monsters would eventually evolve into the Monster Cops Series.

Now The Midnight Special is back out on DVD.

It was a huge effort for no money. And although we lacked back then the things we have now (monsters, fx) we did the very best with what we had. And what exactly was that?

COMEDY.

I'm biased I know, but this movie still makes me laugh, and I'm proud to have this be the very first installment of these Monster Killing Cops.

This would evolve into the very first episode of Monster Cop called SHADOW COMPANY.

Monster Cops: Shadow Company would wrap up a bit of storyline from The Midnight Special, mainly the death of Cutter's wife, and would come a little closer to having more Monster and Action elements.

The next episode would evolve even further. Exploring newer characters and adding even more action and horror elements into the mix. MONSTERS Vs. COPS would also bring in some of that endearing character drama while mixing in that goofy comedy we love so much.

And now we re-release The Midnight Special. To honor where we have come from, and help us prepare for the next level. A new set of episodes will be released this year, some for free on online like we've been doing, but you'll have a chance to see the full series once we release it on DVD later this Winter.

And I'm hoping we'll get to see the final evolution of this series, and you'll see how we've come full circle and will get to that specific artistic execution I've been looking for.

We'll be working on episodes, shorts, and features for Monster Cops for a while, but I'm hoping soon we can bring you that perfect amount of drama, comedy, horror, and action.

Julie Keels

I'm sad to report that our dear friend Julie Keels has passed away. She was not only our set photographer, but a great person, and a dear friend.

Still only inching forward with Monster Cops production, but we have resumed editing for the next few episodes. And while you wait for new content on the MC front, we'd also like to point out what else is going on in other productions.

Firstly if you're not aware, our little company is called WTW Productions (Whether The Weather Productions). Haven't registered a domain yet, but feel free to take a look at our preliminary site here:

I threw together a small demo reel.

If you check out the site you'll see a list of some of our other projects, most notably a short film I've been planning to shoot since last year called REDD. It's my little twist on the Red Riding Hood story, a more of an adventure, horror, action version where our Red Riding Hood (aka REDD played by April Crum), takes on an evil forest filled with demonic Werewolves. Check out some of the stills I took this past week.

REDD is going to be about 8 minutes long, with a shorter 4 minute viral version. It's part short, part mock trailer. It's an idea I've had for a while, and the point in producing it is to really create something big budget cinematic using all of our no-budget resources. The costumes, fx, props, all of it done like we do Monster Cops, with no money, and a ton of work and creativity. I really want to show how we can make a big movie for nothing.

This is being shot using the Canon T2i. A really great camera which I've already used to shoot this commercial for Midway Wicked Woods, which is airing on the local Fox Affiliate WGHP here in the Triad, NC.

So we've got alot going on, but we haven't given up on Monster Cops. There will be more soon, and definitely a new episode up before the year is over. We're glad people are still excited about Monster Cops and we hope you'll enjoy Redd as well as our other upcoming productions as well.

Twists in the Plot

Due to several factors including a two week delay because of my crashed computer, Monster Cops is on hold. Of course it is. Go back and read previous blogs and you will see a familiar pattern. We are, after all, doing this with no money. But of course, it is not the end. Inching my way through editing the footage that we do have, right now it is kind of a struggle to get everyone scheduled as well as work around my own schedule. That two weeks without my desktop didn't help anything at all.

But we are indeed still plotting, prodding, preparing. Pretty sure one of those words doesn't belong.

We're still working on new episodes, and working on that ever so elusive DVD compilation of Monster Cops Series 1. It's just going to take some time. But if you are just dying to see some of the other cool stuff I and the rest of the Cops are working on, then by all means head on over to my blog

Monster Cops Vlog: The Office Part 1

This past 4th, 5th, and 6th (Wed, Thurs, Fri) we started back up production on the next few episodes. We were at our office location knocking out the majority of our headquarter scenes. A great time was had by all. Well I know I had a great time. And we got quite a bit done. Shot scenes for the new episode entitled Chimera. As well as scenes for Blood Moon and Dead By Dawn.

We should have 2 more episodes online for all to see before October, with a DVD release of the full first series. With a complete 6 episodes at least. I'm working out the specs for the DVD. It's looking like a 2 disc set, with plenty of special features and videos not available online, including an extended gag reel, which many of you seem to love so much.

Also working on a total revamp of the website to enhance your viewing experience for the soon to come new episodes.

Thank you all so much for the messages. So glad we gain new fans everyday and that you guys like what we're putting out. Hopefully we can keep it up and continue to bring the full series that I imagine.

Whether we end up on TV or we reach our viewers through the power of the interwebs, I'm just happy to be entertaining all of you with our tales of comedy, action, and horror. So much more to come. So stay tuned.

Quick Update for July

July is a busy month for me anyhow, seems to be the Birthday month, not only for myself, but alot of people. On top of all that I do have alot of video work, projects and ads to finish up, and of course, Monster Cops.

Working on editing an episode right now. Getting ready to start shooting another one. We'll have a good amount of content for the DVD coming up this Fall, and yes, as some have asked, there is already one planned screening for 3 episodes in North Carolina. More on all that later.

Just know we're hard at work, and of course, we are still fundraising. So here comes the obligatory Fund Raising Widget.

Yup, it keeps turnin. Right off the bat, gotta say, we need your pledges.

Time's Up

The post I made over at Kickstarter.

And so we reach the end of our time here on Kickstarter without reaching our target goal. But the upside is we did get some backers, and we were able to get the word out to maybe a few more people that may have not known about Monster Cops before. Also I had fun making the Vlogs.

Thank you all so, so, so much for showing your support. Thank you to those that have messaged with kudos and positive comments, and especially to our wonderful and amazing backers. It means alot to me to know you guys would put money up to help this project.

Rest assured, this does not mean the end of Monster Cops. As I've stated in previous Vlogs and Blogs, we'll continue to produce this the way we've always done it, with our creativity, our ingenuity, and our passion and love for this series. I get messages every week from different people who find our little series and love it. So we'll do what we can to make em, and get em out to it's intended audience.

As much as we can do with no money, we will still try to scrounge up what we can to help with the marketing, pay for festival fees, and cover a few production costs (mainly food for the cast and crew). In order to really get the job done we will need more than just a few bucks from our day job checks. I actually kind of leaned on what he said in an email to me. ;) Talking to him and hearing what he had to say, I got that he really got the episode, and I'm happy that he was able to connect with it. It's always great to find that people get exactly what it is your trying to convey in your work.

We'll be getting more reviews as we reach more press. Especially when we start doing screenings and fests with that episode. Which of course depends on what kind of money we can get in.

Our Kickstarter effort is not looking all that great, but we're not quite done yet. Even if we don't make it, we still have some other opportunities for current backers and anyone else who wants to contribute to actually contribute directly to us. We need whatever cash we can get to help us get those screenings going as well as to help supplement some production costs for these next few episodes. More on that after Kickstarter is all said and done.

A few days ago, HorrorHound Magazine editor-in-chief Nathan Hanneman lost his 34 year old sister Angela to cancer. I know most of you probably didn't know Angela and you probably don't know Nathan either, but that's neither here nor there. The horror community is truly one big family and Nathan and his family could use our help to pay for his sister's funeral expenses - obviously, her being so young, no money was set aside for such a horrible thing. We're getting down to it now. And we need more pledges. So please do what you can to spread the word, and if you can, please, PLEASE, make a pledge. You can pledge as low as $1. JUST $1!!!!

As I've stated before, we'll be going ahead with a new episode soon. But only if we get the funding in can we, for sure, do more than 1 episode (3 more, possibly 4, which would make a total of 5 or 6). And if we get the funding then we can definitely setup digital downloads, and of course the special edition DVD Series 1 of Monster Cops.

We'll continue to pump out as much Monster Cops content as we can. Our ultimate goal is to provide those digital downloads, put out DVD's, and at the sametime create an equal amount of free content for you to see on the website, for as long as we can, and as long as people like it.

If we can reach our goal of $4,000 then it's all good. If we do not reach that goal in the next 15 days, then the pledges go away, and we'll resign ourselves to producing what we can when we can, which means 2 year hiatus between episodes.

If we raise the money then we'll be working on at least 3 episodes this summer. If we don't raise it, we'll do what we've always done and make the best with what little we've got. We'll be producing at least one more episode this Summer, whether we get the money or not.

Next episode is Monster Cops: Dead By Dawn. It's the Vampire episode, and I really can't wait to get started on it.

A couple people have messaged me and asked what the long term goal for Monster Cops is and do we always plan on putting our stuff online for free.

The plan is to continue to make as much content that we can and put the majority of it online. If we put out a DVD, I'd definitely want to have content that you would only see on the DVD. So if we produced a total of 8 episodes, I'd probably put 5 of them online, with the full line up available on DVD or for Digital Download. But I'd want to continue to create as many Minisodes/Webisodes as we can, and continue to make those available for free.

I want to be able to provide as much free content as possible, make enough money off of it to create bigger and better content, and at the sametime provide content you can purchase and own yourself. All the while raising money for charities. If you come to the website, I want you to be able to have alot of content to consume. If you want to purchase a DVD or Digital Download, then I want you to have something unique and special for your money.

I'm always looking into to new ways to get our content out, and I've been studying as many new (and old) business models and distribution strategies as I can.

However we can, we'll continue to make Monster Cops and get it out to you anyway possible.

It's been a busy couple of days and it's not slowing down.

First off I've been trying to fix some issues with the site. So some pages are incomplete and some video players aren't working properly. But all will be well tonight.

Just a quick update.

Next episode is held up due to unforeseen computer problems. It is currently being remedied and I hope to get back to editing this week.

In the meantime I'm working on re-writes for the next few episodes and re-tooling the business plan and agenda so we can get theses episodes out to its intended audience, hit some screenings through out the country, and get ready for Monster Cops Series 1 DVD this fall.

I'm anxious to get this new episode out for all to see. I feel like this one is a bit closer to what I envisioned Monster Cops to be. Funny for sure, a good amount of Monster action (zombies specifically in this episode), and a bit of character driven drama, all wrapped up in a reality show atmosphere.

We'll be spending the next few months putting together several more episodes and minisodes, all leading up to a nice little DVD release. I know several of you have asked how you can own your own copy of the Monster Cops series, and it's coming.

Wrapping up this episode this week. Also doing site updates, so please be patient as some links and video players may not work properly. I know some of the comment widgets have disappeared. Hopefully next week, we'll have a fully updated and functioning site with a brand spanking new 20 minute episode for all to see.

Absolutely nothing.

Quick update. Trying to take advantage of this extra time I've got on my hands, decided to really make a run for it and do as much work on Monster Cops as possible. Yes there has been a bit of a hiatus do to the usual life/reality stuff, (Day jobs, Scheduling, Holidays, Weather, Dams, Beavers, etc.)

Was able to update not only the site, but the Minisodes (formerly webisodes) with two newish videos. One is called WOLF BAIT, where Hoss shows us his technique for luring out Werewolves. The second is called CHOPS, where Bateman and Cutter subdue a potential Vampire, who may or may have not shaved his chops off, and may have eaten a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Some funny stuff, yes, but it is delving a little too much into the wackiness with no sign of Monsters, and we are after all, Monster Cops. I want to make sure that some of the videos coming up will feature just a bit more horror and Monsters go along with the comedy, so a Zombie themed full length episode is coming, as is a an even more Zombie filled video / Zombie Training School.

The plan is to really get back on the ball with Monster Cops, more episodes, more minisodes, and much more entertainment to really show you the full extent of just how awesome and entertaining Monster Cops can be. We'll try not to let the supposed trappings of reality get in the way of that. Perhaps (God willing) we'll even have some merchandise and a Series 1 DVD available for purchase, as so many of you have messaged me about over the past coupla years.

I'm really going to bust my ass to make it all happen. Cuz, girl ... you know it's true.

Yeah, I'm sorry, I was just trying to come full circle and find a way to fit in the Milli Vanilli reference and it just came off kind of stupid and cheesy, and now I'm rambling.

Been hard at work (not really) trying to put together the next minisode (note we changed webisode to minisode since techincally all episodes on the web would be considered "web"isodes, and minisode makes more sense since they are on the "mini" side. Hmmm, then maybe we should call them minisides. Anyhoo.)

As always working towards trying to get some sort of funding going, but not really a huge huge priority, since we cam do this no budget. There are a few irons in the fire, so to speak, but as always I never hold my breath on anything. If something happens it'll happen. Got some more time to work on Monster Cops now, so that is exactly what I will be doing, and I hope to get new material up very soon.

Missing In Action

No this is not a blog about the classic Chuck Norris series of action movies. (Which I love by the way.) Just figured Missing In Action was the best way to describe Monster Cops at this stage.

We are indeed MIA. But we are not without a battle plan. Monster Cops has no budget. We make em because we love to make em and with whatever resources we can. Sadly this means we are at the mercy of all sorts of scheduling conflicts as well as our day jobs. Oh if only we could make Monster Cops for a living. If it's in the cards or not, well that's something we'll have to wait and see.

In the meantime we try to do the best that we can with the time we've got. Monster Cops is also on hold do to a few other projects that are being worked on as well. For more on all that, feel free to check out my personal site PATRICKPREJUSA.COM

We already have alot of footage shot for the next few episodes and webisodes. And coming up soon we'll have a few production days just to work on Monster Cops.

Thanks to everyone who have emailed and or messaged me about Monster Cops. We are still currently on hold. I've had some commercial work to do as well as other video projects to work on. Right now I'm prepping for possibly TWO feature films that we'll be working on in the next few months, and I promise, somewhere in there we'll pump out some Monster Cops stuff. Planning to finish the episode entitled MONSTERS Vs. COPS of which we posted the cold open for already. And there is potential to do a couple of webisodes, possibly 3.

Someone asked what is the difference between episodes and webisodes. Webisodes are short between 3 to 10 minutes. Episodes are longer between 15 to 24 minutes.

Several of you have asked what movies I am working on and is one of them a Monster Cops movie. Currently I am putting together the resources and the financing for a feature film I wrote titled BOBBY'S CLOSET. It is a Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Action, Horror, Comedy and it is NOT Monster Cops related.

The second feature film is one I am currently writing and is NOT Monster Cops either, but is somewhat related to Monster Cops and is part of that universe.

Monster Cops is a labor of love. It's also one none of us are getting paid for. If you're part of our cast and crew, you're doing it for the same reasons I'm doing it. Because you believe in this thing called Monster Cops and you think that it'll make a great web series/TV show/feature film. Unless you are Chris and Brandon then you're doing it strictly for resume credit and because you're bored.

One of these days we'll have somewhat of a budget and we can then deliver what I truly have in my head. But until then we will continue to make webisodes and episodes trying to show you my vision, doing the best with what we've got. Just not for the next month.

Other projects are a callin, and perhaps we may squeeze in a shoot for Monster Cops in the next few weeks, but for the most part I'm going to be bombarded with other production work at least until after July 4th. Hopefully after then we can get back into the swing of Monster Cops and complete another episode and a few more webisodes.

Something Amazing

Inching my way towards a complete episode. The last one (Shadow Company) I really loved, but I need more horror. More Monsters, more Cops, and definitely an AHA moment. To borrow a phrase from Oprah. The AHA moment which I also call the Two Cathedral's moment. Two Cathedral's is the name of one of my favorite West Wing episodes. The end of that episode was very much an AHA moment, or more like a WOW moment.

That's what I want in this episode. I do indeed want to continue to make episodes and webisodes, and we will, even for no money. But I want this to be a final example of what I'm aiming for. I want this episode to really hit a home run. And what is that home run exactly? You should be wowed by what is accomplished with such a low (no) budget. And when the end titles hit you should say to yourself "Wow, that was amazing."

The deal with no budget means you are at the mercy of everyone's schedule as well as every part of life that you can't solve with a bit of money. If we had a budget, of course, we could pay everyone and buy things we need, as opposed to wonder about people's schedules and rig something together. Don't get me wrong, it's a blast to create from nothing, I do love it. But the thrill of doing something from nothing does at times collide with the storytelling process. I know what I want story wise, but I can't just make it happen with no money. I have to take a look at what I've got, can get, or might get, and write around it. Which means the end of this episode may not be exactly what I envisioned.

It's a compromise I've written about before. Writing around what you've got. Yes we are a talented group. Yes we can make alot happen. But we are still at the mercy of how reality evolves your creation. Alot of it is planned, but much of it is planned improvisation. Which often does alter that Wow moment. But you do your best and forget the rest.

Stress is a part of the problem. I've had to explain to someone recently, who didn't fully understand this process. They ask, Why was it so hard? Why couldn't I just get it done? Like all of creation, it takes time. I envy the sculptor who has only a rock and a chisel, or even clay and their hands. As a no budget moviemaker it's way more than that. I'm not just the director and writer, two jobs that require full attention. Besides that I have to be the production manager, the fx supervisor, the casting director, the editor, the mixer, the costumer, the caterer, the transportation, the prop builder, the composer, the marketer, the pr, the light designer, web master, PA, AD, DP, DOA, SOS, NWA and the list goes on. All of it with no money, and on a limited schedule.

I do indeed have people who help me. Thankfully every once in a while I will have someone else who can worry about the make up, squibs, fx. Everyone on set is always willing to help carry something, hold something, move something. You know who you are and I thank you. And as much of a big help that is, there are still many hats on my head. It's stressful, it's insane, and it'll make you wanna pull your hair out, have you seen my head?

So why do I do it. Because I believe in that WOW moment. I believe I can hit that home run. I believe I can make more than one person say "Wow, that was amazing." And in the end that's all I really want, just to show you something amazing.

We need more amazing in the world.

Let the midnight special shine a light on me

The signs are everywhere and I can't ignore them. I've been reminded full force of things from the past and it gives me clarity when working on the future.

Credence Clearwater Revival's classic song "Midnight Special". I listened to it constantly when working on the first Monster Cops script, The Midnight Special.

It was this song and 2 others.

Whodini's Classic of Hip-Hop "The Freaks Come Out at Night"

And the one that really inspired me when working on Monster Cops (and still does to this day): The Hollies classic "Long Cool Woman"

It's these three songs I had put on a repeat over and over the entire time I worked on The Midnight Special. To me these songs captures a strong part of the spirit that is Monster Cops. CCR's Midnight Special had that down home rock and blues tone that you really don't associate too much with horror and monsters. Which is why I found it well suited for Monster Cops. It was the feel of how the Cops operated while under the strain of hunting creatures. Cool and groovy, a tone you wouldn't put with hammering stakes in to Vampire hearts. That's the tone of Monster Cops.

The Freaks Come Out at Night was a song that felt right over images of patrol cars looking for, well, freaks. Cops on patrol, investigating strange situations hunting zombies and ghouls. Like driving through neighborhood streets on Halloween Night, seeing costumed creatures roaming around. Plus it was an old school song that did remind me of that Halloween feel, only because it would always end up on someones Halloween music mixtape along with Thriller, The Halloween Theme, and Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes.

And finally Long Cool Woman was always a favorite of mine. Definitely my fav song from The Hollies and in my top 10 of classic rock songs. This song always felt like great background narration for some undercover cop closing in for the arrest, or DEA agents on a bust. Desipte what it's lyrics may define it as, to me this was the action theme for Monster Cops. The bouncy rock rhythm and feel of CCR's Midnight Special but with a harder edge and faster pace. Rock and Blues for Cops on the move, and that's Monster Cops. Burnt out and blue on the job, cracking jokes about the bust, and all the while the Vampires burn and the Zombie heads explode.

Odd, strange, quirky, funny, and thrilling with monsters and guns thrown in.

All this means that I'm nowhere near done with Monster Cops. There is that specific feel and vision I'm going for and I feel like if I can really nail it, it will really be something great. Not that I wasn't already aiming for that, it's just tonight has been very motivating, and a little inspiring.

Still have many many other videos to work on of course. The video work never goes away, but I do hope to get on the ball with Monster Cops and get as much of my vision out there as possible, more shorts, more episodes, much, much more Monster Cops.

COLLINSVILLE, Illinois - Pranksters in at least three states are messing with electronic road signs meant to warn motorists of possible traffic problems by putting drivers on notice about Nazi zombies and raptors. And highway safety officials aren't amused.

The latest breach came on Tuesday during the morning rush hour near Collinsville, Illinois, where hackers changed a sign along southbound Interstate 255 to read, "DAILY LANE CLOSURES DUE TO ZOMBIES."

A day earlier in Indiana's Hamilton County, the electronic message on a board in Carmel's construction zone warned drivers of "RAPTORS AHEAD - CAUTION."

And signs in Austin, Texas, recently flashed: "NAZI ZOMBIES! RUN!!!" and "ZOMBIES IN AREA! RUN."

Officials in Illinois are concerned the rewritten signs distract motorists from heeding legitimate hazards down the road. The hacked sign on Tuesday originally warned drivers of crews replacing guardrails.

"We understood it was a hoax, but at the same time those boards are there for a reason," said Joe Gasaway, an Illinois Department of Transportation supervisory field engineer. "We don't want (drivers) being distracted by a funny sign."

Authorities haven't figured out how pranksters access the signs. Gasaway believes the Illinois sign was changed remotely, and Austin Public Works spokeswoman Sara Hartley suspected the hackers there cut a padlock to get into the signs' computers.

Some websites, such as Jalopnik.com, have published tutorials titled "How to Hack an Electronic Road Sign" as a way to alert security holes to traffic-safety officials. Jalopnik urges its readership of 2.6 million a month not to put its lesson to practice.

"Hacking generally is about showing where there are holes in security systems, and I think this is a great example of that," the site's editor-in-chief, Ray Wert, said. "I'm sure there are all sorts of ways to use that information in a way that's inappropriate, but we're trying to make clear this is an issue that needs to be confronted by traffic safety and transportation officials."

Wert said he had no immediate plans to take down Jalopnik's how-to guide.

In Illinois, tampering with an official traffic control device is a misdemeanour punishable by up to a US$250 fine - half what a culprit might have to pay in Texas if caught. If convicted in Indiana, a culprit faces up to a year in jail and $5,000 in fines.

Still Working It

It was hectic as usual over the holidays, but we managed to get some shooting in for Monster Cops. Coming up I hope to have at least one more full episode and 3 minisodes for your consumption in the next few months. Of course the day job fills in alot of time and there is much commercial work to be done before we can go off and play Monster Cops again. There is a VLOG coming soon to show you what some of us have been up to. Here's a small taste in freeze frame form.

Sfumato

For many Sfumato is the Italian term for a painting technique which overlays translucent layers of colour to create perceptions of depth, volume and form.

Sounds like movie making.

Da Vinci himself described sfumato as "without lines or borders, in the manner of smoke or beyond the focus plane"

Certainly this can relate to movie making.

I know the word Sfumato from Michael J. Gelb's book How To Think Like Leonardo DaVinci. There he lists Sfumato as one of Da Vinci's 7 principals. "A Willingness to embrace ambiguity, paradox, and uncertainty."

Now that definitely sounds like movie making to me.

Sfumato, for me, has evolved from just an art technique, into a way of life. To embrace uncertainty. As stated in Gelb's book, to literally go up in smoke. The artistic technique refers to using brush strokes to blend tones together. No harsh lines means a more realistic blend of colors, giving you a better expression of realism. The best example is the Mona Lisa. If we didn't know any better we'd almost think it was a photograph. The paint blended together to recreate reality.

In a way this is what I'm trying to achieve with Monster Cops. It's pretty easy to paint vampires and zombies with harsh lines. Monsters in general lend themselves to a more comic book type world, where the art work can be expressive in it's well defined lines. Just the idea of a Vampire or a Chupacabra does not blend in well with reality. It sticks out, because it's not the norm.

But with Monster Cops I'm trying to blur those lines in order to create a perception of depth. In order to recreate reality. It's practice with each episode, with each shoot. The question always being, how would this play out in reality. If we were REALLY dealing with zombies, vampries, werewolves, etc., how would this secret government agency react? How would we see it on video realistically? What is the most realistic way we can achieve this with the budget we have?

It is practice. It is trial and error. And I'm learning. The first Monster Cops project was The Midnight Special. With it I felt close to the look and feel I wanted, but not really there. With the Shadow Company episode I feel we hit the mark slightly. A good start, but we can do better. I do feel we're on the right track. In the end it is about the essence of your story. What is it we are trying to achieve with Monster Cops? What exactly is that vision?

It's a realistic look into a group of Government Monster Killers. The action, the thrills, and the horror of the investigation and the hunt for creatures of the night, mixed with humor and pathos.

In other words, Cops meets The Office meets Blair Witch meets Monster Squad,

An action, comedy, reality tv show, with realistic depth.

And how do we achieve that depth? How do we blur those lines to recreate reality? By embracing ambiguity, paradox, and uncertainty.

Yup, that's definitely movie making.

Working on the scripts for the next few episodes. Shooting starts back up this Saturday, but with the cold weather, we are relegated to indoor shots. We'll see how it works out. I'm confident we'll have one more episode up before January.

Most likely going to add a cast and crew call page soon.

DIY NECRONOMICON The Video

Necronomicon: Book Of The Dead. DIY Version

I can comfortably say that I've gotten at least one thing done on my list. I made my very own Necronomicon. Or to be exact, Necronomicon Ex Mortis. The horror geek in me has to specify that if I say Necronomicon then I'm refrencing H.P. Lovecraft's Necronomicon. When I'm actually leaning more towards the Book Of The Dead featured in Sam Raimi's Evil Dead Trilogy.

Legend has it that it was written by the Dark Ones. Necronomicon ex
Mortis, roughly translated, "Book of the Dead". The book served as a passageway to the evil worlds beyond. It was written long ago. When the seas ran red with blood. It was this blood that was used to ink the book. In the year 1300 AD, the book disappeared.

For the current Monster Cops Episode I wanted to refrence Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn, seeing as how I love the Evil Dead movies and this particular episode is titled Monster Cops: Dead By Dawn. The plot itself doesn't actually have much to do with the Evil Dead mythos, but I wanted to make a nod to it. The Monster Cops breach a very evil vampire lair and I wanted them to come across some evil objects. So why not have one of those objects be a Necronomicon? Plus I though it would be fun to build one.

The Necronomicon has actually changed appearance throughout each Evil Dead film. Here's what some of them look liked.

The Necronomicon Ex Mortis from the very first low budget film Evil Dead. This lower budget version looks pretty creepy to me, but I was always much fonder of the look they used in the sequel.

A closer look at the version from Evil Dead 2. The budget obviously went up on the prop making. I do love this look quite a bit and is the look I was leaning towards when creating my own.

And this is the version in Army Of Darkness (Evil Dead 3). The prop making budget went all the way up this time around thanks to Universal Studios. Still holding to eerieness but looked alot more subtle with much better quality.

The limited edition DVD's of Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 came in really cool looking Necronomicon covers. But even they somewhat differ from any of the above designs of the book.

And here's the first pic of mine.

Wasn't going for exactness, but I wanted to stay with the same feel as the Evil Dead trilogy. I wanted the eyes on mine to be much angrier. This didn't actually cost me much to make since I had all the materials already. The base of it is a cardboard box duct taped together to form the actual cover and spine. The wrinkles in the skin were made from masking tape and duct tape. The eyes, nose, and mouth were formed with long rolled up pieces of duct tape then sealed down with masking tape. Then I painted it with acrylic, using black for the inside of the eyes and mouth, and the rest painted with brown mixed in with some cadium red.

Right now I'm sealing the whole thing down with Mod Podge sealer to give it some strength and so the paint won't run, just in case it ever gets wet (have you ever been on one of our sets?) I'm going to finish the back, and then fill the middle in with actual pages of monster drawings and images just as soon as Mr. Brandon White finishes them.

I'll post a video tutorial as soon as it's finished. This will actually only make an appearance in the current episode for about 10 seconds, but I think it will lend alot to the feel of this episode.

Directing The Dead

It's a non stop ride. What with the day job, trying to get shooting straight, figuring out locations, getting the shots in order, dealing with lighting issues, and being halfway through production while the majority of your props are not finished and you still have 3 parts to cast.

But as I've said before, it's all about having problems you like. And dealing with movie stuff is always a welcome dilemna that I am very grateful for. And the day job doesn't actually feel like work, so I can't complain.

Thanks again to Richard Gaither for not only playing a featured extra as a Monster Cop, but for also getting us all the resources of the Midway Wicked Woods Haunted Trail. The 4 Walking Corpses of the evening. These guys did a great job. They made directing the dead quite fun. Our first zombie scene for this episode featured pale white zombies, newer corpses. But I also wanted to include older, creepier, rotting corpses. These guys pulled it off quite nicely.

Vampire Brides, Take 1

The Dead By Dawn episode requires three Vampire Brides. 2 of which I had cast for sure. The third, I'm still looking for actually. I wanted to stick with the traditional look of the Vampire Brides (aka Dracula's Brides) each girl very beatiful but with different looks. Normally each girl has different hair color, dark, red, and blonde. I have a few choices right now for a blonde, but I have yet to actually talk to those choices. We'll see how it works out.

Let's focus on the two we've got. Kelsey Granger, our dark haired vamp. And Cat Degroot, our red head. I was going to wait til I had found the blonde and shoot the three altogether, but Kelsey had to head back to school soon, so I decided to go ahead and shoot Kelsey and Cat together. Now I didn't have the location I wanted yet so I had to do something I was trying to avoid. Green screen.

Green screen means shooting your actors in front of a green (sometimes blue) screen, and then do composite work in editing. Meaning I remove the green screen from behind the actors, and then place any background I need behind them. I've seen it done very well, and I've seen it done badly, and I've done it both well and badly. Either way, for a project like monster cops where I'm trying to get the most realistic feel possible, using a green screen wasn't something I wanted to do (you never see any bad cg fx on Cops now do ya?). I was already rolling my eyes at the crappy cg'd gun fire I put in The Midnight Special. This time around, I was determined to keep any cg or compositing to a minimum, and try to do every single effect practical and on set.

But in some cases you are left with no choice but to do the best with what you've got. So some cg and compositing would now be required. The thing about The Midnight Special was, I didn't have the best computer resources in the world. I was using a somewhat satisfactory program for my fx work, and I'm quite surprised I was able to edit a 90 minute movie on that frickin computer (80 gigs/256 ram, I pushed it to it's limits.) Now I'm blessed with a computer that is entirely too powerful to exist, oh, and a little something called Adobe After Effects CS3. So now I'm ok with doing a bit of CG and composting if I can do it well and only where it's needed.

Did you hear that Hollywood? WHERE IT'S NEEDED!!!!

Majority of the FX would be done on set. Any monster fx, most of the blood squibs, any gore, etc. would be done live. CG would be used if absolutely necessary, and only as a tool to help tell the story or achieve the scene if we couldn't achieve it any other way, and not just for the holy hell of it (see Van Helsing 2004).

So a green screening we went. Sadly I had to use the same green material I used back in the days of Living Dead Girls. Does anybody remember my Living Dead Girls series? Either of the 2 of you reading this? No? Me neither. Thankfully the creases in the sheets won't matter much. The solid green background is going to be helpful enough in compositing. Also most of the pitfalls you get when green screening on a low budget can be avoided since many of the Vampire Brides scenes are fairly short, and also take place in deep dark hallways and tunnels. Hopefully you won't even be able to tell the difference when I actually start editing.

Just a little test to see what you can do with a green screen. Here are the two girls in front of our crease filled green sheets. Let's take out the green. You can see a bit of an outline of the green, especially around the hair, but it's fine.
Let's throw in a public domain photo of a cemetary.
And let's smooth it all out with a few filters. Black and white, with a blue tint. Went for that old, old, antique film look. Really we could have done much more, but you get the idea behind using a green screen.

Overall I had a good time shooting that day. Hopefully the girls had fun too. They were wonderful to work with. I'm confident we got some great shots, and the footage should look fine in the final product. Ah the final product, can't wait to see what that looks like.

We need people to play zombies. Yes that's right, the living dead. Slow (and some fast), moaning, flesh craved, zombified, walking corpses. So if you don't mind us putting some make up on you, or even have your head blown up, then by all means come on out.

Notes: Wear clothes you don't mind getting messed up or bloodied, especially if you want to die or get shot. Our blood may stain some clothes. Please nothing with any print or logos.

There may be much sitting around waiting while we set up shots, so feel free to bring a lawn chair of some sort.

Got back a few hours ago from shooting Dead By Dawn. Just got the email a little while ago from the fest organizers. It's always exciting to know your movie is going to screen somewhere. Even more so when it's a fest. Honestly I was getting a little antsy, waiting for somekind of notification from a fest, so it's nice to actually get this news.

Horror icons Ken Foree and Tiffany Shepis will be there. It really looks like it's going to be a fun festival. Definitely going to try to make it out there. Very exciting.

Building The MKX300

Finally got this segment done. Only took me 2 days, but somehow it felt like forever. Editing this video seemed to be more complicated than editing the actual episode. I think it was just due to trying to put all the right pics in order.

This gun was fun to make. It's amazing what you can do with what you've got or can get for cheap. The most expensive things on the gun are the camera, which I already had, and then the spotlight, which was about 30 bucks. Aside from that this gun cost about 30 bucks to make. Put a second one together minus the camera and spotlight for about 20 bucks more. And I'm putting together some new weapons using these same techniques for the next Monster Cops webisode.

Monster Cops: Shadow Company update

The short/episode that we've been working on for the past few months, Monster Cops: Shadow Company is finally completed. Edited to a final cut, QC'd (quality control, that's what that means. ;)) and is ready to be burned to DVD and submitted to screenings and fests. I hope to get copies to those involved. The overall short/episode is 24 minutes.

I'll be taking a small break from shooting, but then we go right into the next Monster Cops project, a 5 to 6 minute short called Monster Cops: Dead By Dawn. This one I hope to have monster filled as you may have geussed if you read previous postings on One Spartan.

Ooh I'm excited for people to see this last one. Even more excited to show you this next one.

I had alot of fun shooting at the stables. All the cops, all the zombies and everyone in between were a blast to work with. It was really one of those nights that was very productive and extremely fun at the same time. And here's a video blog to show you just how fun it all was. Thanks to all the zombies for getting bloody, and to Kelly Emerson for letting us shoot there.

Edgar Smirch

Edgar Smirch, Half Vampire, Killer for hire, and he's really got it in for Shadow Company. In a scene from this episode, Edgar Smirch was played beautifully by the great D.G. Holland. Here are a few pics from and freeze frames from that day, and as you can see we got pretty bloody. Thanks again to Chris for letting us abuse his office.

Our Stage June

To my surprise both BROKEBACK DINOSAUR and WOLF HUNT are in the top ten in the quarter finals in the Our Stage monthly contest. BROKEBACK DINOSAUR is in the COMEDY category and WOLF HUNT is in the SHORT FILMS category.

So if you don't mind, we sure could use the exposure, especially for Monster Cops and the Wolf Hunt scene.

Zombies

Here are the freezes from the last scene we shot this past Saturday. The zombie scene. If you were someone who wanted to be a zombie and you were not there, not to worry, there will be plenty of opportunity to be a zombie, especially coming up in July.

This was a fun shoot. I had a lot of fun and I certainly hope that everyone else had as much fun as I. I always love those days when there's a set full of people. William Stine did an excellent job on the zombie make up. Arlanda M. Robinson did her own zombie make up and did an excellent job as well. Arlanda and the rest of the zombies were awesome, especially Skylar playing our resident brain eating little girl zombie.

And the cops were kick ass as well. Richard Gaither and Aaron Plouffe backing us up as featured extra cops. And finally I was able to get my main cops in action, Nicole, Chris, and Brandon. I decided to take my character out of this scene so I could concentrate on the camera work and directing. Wanted to make sure we got this just right.

And of course special thanks to Jacob Hauser who was our first test subject for squibs in the first video blog, he returned for this shoot to be zombie #4 or is it 5? I actually don't know. Very very special thanks to Brian Tally, our resident production coordinator/key grip/trouble shooter. Thanks for once again backing me up and helping all of us out, and for making every shoot as smooth as possible.

And a very very very truly heartfelt special thanks to Kelly Emerson and her family for making us welcome at their home and for allowing us to shoot so much at the Northwoods Stables as well as helping us out with other locations and props. None of this would have been possible with out you Kelly.
